Sittingbourne MP's meeting for victims
An Equitable Life policyholders meeting recently took place at the Labour Hall in Sittingborne, Kent.
The meeting was called by Derek Wyatt, MP for Sittingbourne & Sheppey in response to the concerns of constituents, who were policyholders in the failed Equitable Life Assurance Society.
Derek Wyatt welcomed about 40 constituents and introduced Colin Slater from campaigning group EMAG. Mr Slater detailed what went wrong with Equitable Life, the finding of the Parliamentary Ombudsman, her recommendations for compensation and the Action EMAG believes is necessary to convert that recommendation into redress.
This was followed by a lively question and answer session. Derek Wyatt spoke about his existing support for Occupational pensioners (including those employed by ASW in his constituency). He explained how Billions of pounds in compensation was eventually obtained for them through effective campaigning.
He confirmed his support for Equitable Life sufferers and encouraged them to press their campaign. He strongly advised EMAG and policyholders to increase the pressure in the run up to the Pre-Budget Statement & the Queen's Speech.
The
response of those attending was supportive and enthusiastic and they have gone
away to write letters and press politicians to back the call for compensation.
